About Us
My Love Affair with Desserts and Dessert Recipes
Hi there, this is Tim and I am gonna tell you all about us and how Best-Dessert-Recipes.com started. For those of you who are curious it's not Timothy and I'm not male - actually it's my Chinese name and it means "sweet". And I'm proud to say I do have a sweet tooth and I love making desserts tremendously. Someone once said that "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach." Well, I say "the way to a man's stomach is through delicious heart melting desserts." Don't believe me? Just choose your favourite dessert recipes and try them out yourself. It never fails to put a smile on my husband's face - even if they are
chocolate dessert recipes.
When you go to parties, buffets or food festivals, what makes your eyes light up? What makes you drool? Where do you tend to stroll to as you enter the buffet area? Your eyes naturally wander to the desserts table. You see colourful spread of cheesecakes, pumpkin pies, puddings and drinks. You feel happy and your day is made!
Let me tell you a little story about myself when I was only about 10 years old. What year was that? Well I'd like to keep it a secret for now. Let's just say its a good many years ago but it's still vivid in my memory.
It was my first desserts experience ... or rather the first cake I saw mom made.
I was only ten years old but ohh, how I remember that afternoon as I watched, fascinated, as the cake rose majestically in the oven, from a mere creamy batter to a beautiful golden butter cake. I can still smell aroma wafting through the entire kitchen the way it was as I am writing this.
When the oven finally turned off and the cake was ready to be served, I eagerly helped mom cut the cake. And helped myself to two slices as well. It was heaven! Nothing beats "my" first cake!
That first experience inspired me to one day make my first dessert. But I had to wait until I was in my late teens before I could do so as the kitchen then was a no-fly zone for me and my sister.
When the opportunity finally came, I planned with my younger sister, Hope, for a weekend project to bake a great-tasting cake. We had no idea what kind of cake it would be and mom was still hesitant about letting us run (perhaps ruin would be what she was afraid of) her kitchen but after much coaxing she finally gave in. She even gave us one of her cake recipes - it was for a steamed sponge cake (I found out later it was a quick and easy dessert to make - one of those easy recipes).
We bought the necessary ingredients, butter and all and followed all instructions to a T. No slip-ups, we were sure. Finally, we poured the batter into the pan and waited in anticipation throughout the whole steaming time. Half an hour had passed but the cake still had not risen. Instead, it looked muddy and pudding-like! There was a thick layer of oil on the surface of the cake. We decided to steam longer but the results were miserably the same.
My mother was mortified. She kept insisting that we must have missed something along the way but we really had no idea. Suspecting the butter to be the problem from the unusual amount of oil, she demanded to run through the recipe.
The recipe required eight ounces of butter.
We had mistakenly bought eight blocks of butter, eight times more than required!
We had to throw away the cake or what it had become. And I refused to lay claim to my first dessert recipe!
Over the years, I learn to be more careful and meticulous in my cake and dessert making endeavours. I made many many more cakes, pies and cookies and began to explore possibilities and "invent" my own dessert recipes.
We would scribble our own dessert recipes or simply cut out recipe contributions from our local dailies and paste them onto old unused diaries. Weekends were mostly spent making desserts and my greatest satisfaction comes from the smile of contentment on mom's face.
It is also as much my hope that this website will be a source of inspiration and a satisfying adventure in your love of making desserts. No matter what great dessert recipes you plan on making, the best desserts are those that put a smile on your face :)
