I remember when I was on the Atkins program, I craved so much for cheesecake that I had to make my own. I used Stevia in my cheesecake and it tasted great. My mother was surprised when I told her to enjoy to her heart's content as this cheesecake is not fattening. She kept asking, "You sure?" as she reached for the third helping. I guess that was quite a success with my first ever diet desserts :)
Natural Alternatives for Sugar
I believe in using only natural ingredients whenever and wherever possible and it is no different here. I recommend using safe natural alternatives for sugar such as :
Stevia, a South American herb used by Guarani Indians of Paraguay for centuries as a sweetener. The leaves of the Stevia plant give a delicious refreshing taste and is 30 times sweeter than the sugar we usually consume.
Refrain from artificial sweeteners as the aspartame content is known to induce health symptoms such as severe drowsiness, headaches, numbness, some even reported blurred vision among others.
Raw Honey but do take them in moderation. Raw honey is good for you, not processed honey.
Organic Sugar comes from sugar cane grown without any chemicals or pesticides use. The colour is darker than white sugar due to its molasses content.
Coconut Palm Sugar made from sap of coconut palms with relatively low glycemic index.
Barley Malt Syrup comes from soaking and sprouting barley to make malt, then adding in more barley. The mixture is cooked until starchy and converted to sugar.
