Chinese Dessert Recipes

Authentic Shanghai Mooncake

Bake your own traditional Shanghai Mooncake that is featured in our Chinese best dessert recipes. Mooncakes are Chinese traditional food snacks served during Mid-Autumn Festival or Lantern Festival which falls on the 15th of the 8th month of the Chinese calendar (usually September). Such traditional sweet Chinese desserts are best enjoyed over freshly brewed Chinese tea.

Ingredients
250 g Butter
120 g Icing sugar
1 Medium Egg
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
350 g All Purpose Flour; sifted
3 tbsp Custard Powder
1 tbsp Milk Powder
2 cups Red Bean Paste or Lotus Paste
1 cup Almond Flakes
1 Medium Egg; lightly beaten

Method

Roll filling paste into even small balls and set aside first.

Cream butter and icing sugar together until smooth and fluffy. Add egg, beat well before adding in vanilla essence. Stir in sifted flour, custard powder and milk powder. Mix until you have a soft dough. Divide into even portions. Roll each ball until flat.

Wrap filling balls with the flattened dough portions. Roll filled dough until the filling is covered. Place on greased baking sheet. Brush the top of each mooncake with beaten egg for glaze. Press almond flakes on top of the mooncakes. Bake at 180 °C or until mooncakes turn golden. Let cakes cool completely before removing onto racks.
